The High-Quality Assessments course is designed for new instructional designers and teachers transitioning into instructional design roles. It comprehensively explores assessment principles, techniques, and best practices in the online higher education context. Participants will learn how to design assessments that accurately measure student learning and provide meaningful feedback.

Who should take this course?

This course suits instructional designers new to the field or teachers looking to transition into instructional design roles. It is specifically designed for those working in online higher education. Participants will gain practical skills and knowledge to develop effective and meaningful assessment strategies in their instructional design practice.

This course can be taken individually or as part 5 of 6 in the Instructional Design Certified Educator (IDCE) program. The courses must be completed in sequence as part of the certificate program. Regardless of the approach chosen, these courses provide valuable knowledge and skills to excel in the field, fostering critical thinking and practical application.

Course objectives:

  • Apply assessment design principles across K-12, higher education, and corporate contexts. 

  • Align assessments with learning outcomes in various educational settings. 

  • Utilize diverse assessment types in online delivery. 

  • Provide effective feedback to support student learning in different learning environments.

Instructional Designer, Author, and Instructor

Sonja has a vast range of experience in various fields. Her expertise includes instructional design, training, and adjunct professorship, particularly emphasizing accessibility, diversity, equity, and belonging at Jackson College. She possesses skills in conflict resolution techniques and holds a Ph.D. in Education: Instructional Design and Technology, a Canvas Educator Certificate, a Trauma-Informed Expressive Artist, and a Certified Mediator through Southeastern Michigan Dispute Resolution Services. As the Executive Director of Tranquil Parenting, Sonja's research has gained recognition through presentations during Research Week at Liberty University and articles published in both Her and Michigan Parent. Her current Ph.D. research in education delves into the correlation between effective instructional design and technology and the successful outcomes of adult learners living with tension and complex PTSD. This research has resulted in development of the Transformative Mindset Instructional Design (TMID) model.
